English: Detail from the stained glass window of the cobblers guild in the Freiburg Minster, showing a boot (symbol of the cobblers' craft) and a "Golden Bear" (the name of the inn where the guild held its meetings). The "Golden Bear" may be identical with the inn Zum roten Bären, since the word "rot" (red) was used to describe gold in the Middle Ages. According to Grimms Wörterbuch, "gold, kupfer, edelsteine und andere mineralien werden häufig rot genannt. rotes gold ist in der dichterischen sprache eine äuszerst beliebte wendung" (http://www.woerterbuchnetz.de/DWB/wbgui_py?lemid=GA00001). |
