Summary

[edit]
Description
English: In late September, foresters and tree-climbing contractors on the Coconino National Forest collected 174 bushels of Ponderosa Pine cones from the Flagstaff Ranger District. These were sent to a greenhouse facility in Boise, where they will be processed, grown, and shipped back to Flagstaff as baby trees. In total, 277 bushels were collected throughout the year. That amounts to roughly 55,000 pine cones in all, from which approximately 1-2 million seeds will be extracted and stored in our seed bank for future reforestation work. This will allow for the eventual reforestation of between 5,000 and 20,000 acres of Ponderosa Pine forest over the next 10+ years. Photos taken 9/22/23 by Danika Thiele.
