Paper tape was used to store data and computer programs, starting in the 1950s. This is a photo of "fan-fold" paper tape, often used on Digital Equipment Corporation computers. A rack-mounted paper tape reader/punch was included with computers such as early PDP-11s for bootstrapping and other uses.
