English: A copy of the Illustrated London News - Saturday February 29, 1908 - still sitting on the desk in Scott's Hut at Cape Evans in Antarctica.
Scott's Hut was erected in 1911 by Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition. The hut housed 25 men that winter and served as a base of operations for the team that would make for the South Pole, and fail, dying in the process. The remaining men who stayed behind at the hut ended up having to spend an additional winter there, in 1912-13. Later, during Shackelton's transantarctic attempt, his Ross Sea Party ended up having to live here at this hut, from 1915-1917 until they were rescued. Three men of the Ross Sea Party died there and a memorial is erected nearby. The hut itself is in remarkable preservation and is still filled with foodstuffs, scientific equipment, sleeping areas, newspapers...it is like time travel stepping foot in there. |
