玄味子(市河寛斎)著、磯田湖龍斎画。遊里風俗絵入り漢詩集。明和頃、申椒堂(須原屋市兵衛)刊。大本1冊。跋九日山人(平沢旭山)。墨摺り。東奥逸客(藤塚知周)の序に「余得玄味子所伝北里歌於九日山人之処焉」云々とあり、九日山人宅で得た玄味子の竹枝「北里歌」について、その詩文が「北里」(新吉原)の妖態を模し、嬌情を表すことの妙趣なるを愛玩する余り、湖龍子に絵を請い、板行に及んだという。序に次いで、玄味子の「北里謌三十首」を置き、「鄭衛之声放於仲尼、其詩列之雅頌、所以不舎其言也、余欲輯全唐詩逸、故於此篇特表出之」とあり、「全唐詩逸」の編纂を意図するゆえに、この篇を著したという。本文は、見開きごとに卑俗な表現を用いて遊里の風俗を叙した詩句(竹枝)を掲げ、各詩句を異なる書風によって表記するが、書は鳳兮、吾従、桃花女、偸楽山人、遊女筒井、三世路考、東野山人、その他、俳人、遊女、役者、書家など多様な人々による。絵は湖龍斎の繊細で妖艶な味わいの美人画で、廓の内部の諸相を巧みに描出する。(鈴木淳)〈参考文献〉『稀書複製会叢書』第4期第17回、1926年4月、米山堂。『日本古典文学大辞典』第5巻「北里歌」(執筆・揖斐高)、1984年10月、岩波書店。
