喜多川歌麿画、紀定丸撰。絵入り狂歌本。寛政元年(1789)8月、江戸耕書堂(蔦屋重三郎)刊。色摺り、大判1帖。欠丁本で、全10丁の内、6丁存。絵は5図の内、2図存。装訂はもと画帖装であるが、現状は背が取れた折帖。題簽の「狂月坊」は、「狂月望」とあるものよりも早印。狂歌は巻首が鹿津部真顔、巻尾が宿屋飯盛、唐衣橘洲で、当時の狂歌壇の主要メンバーが総動員された趣である。すべて月を詠み込む。残存する絵は明石の浦の月図及び月に芋洗い図。題名は、狂歌師の祖と仰がれる冷泉為守の号暁月に因むとされる。「坊」は僧侶に添える「房」と同義。「望」は望月の意。明石の浦の月図は、『源氏物語』明石巻で、光源氏が明石君を訪ね、八月十三夜の月見をする描写による。衣装の模様を空摺りにし、岸辺にぼかしを入れ、すやり霞は金泥を用いるなど技術と贅を凝らす。(鈴木淳)〈参考文献〉浅野秀剛、ティモシー・クラーク編『喜多川歌麿』(「喜多川歌麿」展図録)1995年、千葉市美術館。
