Summary
[edit]DescriptionMurky waters.jpg |
English: A biologist, searching in the murky water of Lake Tanganyika for one more fish specimen to add to her bag and study. To collect samples for a study on the diet adaptations of cichlid fishes to better understand their evolution and speciation, a team of researchers travelled in 2020, in the midst of the second Covid wave, to Lake Tanganyika in Zambia. The over 250 different cichlid species of Lake Tanganyika are famous for their adaptive radiation. At the lake, cichlids were collected in various ways: by snorkelling, diving, angling and buying them from local fishermen. Since the lake is one of the biggest freshwater lakes in the world, the weather and water conditions can vary and are not always favourable. In this picture, you can see one of the researchers from the team searching for yet another specimen in the murky water. In her hands, she holds a bag already filled with various fish. She needs one more, but from another species than the ones that are swimming around in the background. |
