Description |
English: Mr George White, Assistant Engineer of 'Alert' and the ship's photographer with 'Nelly', Commander Markham's black Retriever. George White and Thomas Mitchell took most of the photographs for the expedition. They had been advised by Captain de Abney of the Army School of Photography in Chatham, a pioneer of the ‘dry-plate’ process. Captain Nares acknowledged both in the official report: ‘Mr Mitchell and Mr George White, Engineer, have made a most valuable collection of photographs of subjects connected with arctic life and scenes'. In early April 1876, White also accompanied the sledging expedition of Commander Markham as far as his provisions allowed. Together Mitchell and White left a photographic legacy that was continued by subsequent polar explorers. |
