Summary
[edit]DescriptionMerrist Wood College - geograph.org.uk - 57320.jpg |
English: Merrist Wood College. The Merrist Wood estate was compulsorily purchased by Surrey County Council in 1939 with the idea of converting Merrist Wood House into a mental health institution. The Second World War meant that the plans were abandoned and it became an evacuation centre for council officers. In 1943 a government committee recommended that every county should have its own Farm Institute to train people for careers on the land and Merrist Wood was selected as Surreys.
Now part of Guildford College, the 400-acre site at Merrist Wood specialises in land-based programmes including horticulture, floristry, landscaping, garden design, animal care, countryside, golf, sports turf, arboriculture and equine studies. As might be expected, the college grounds are beautifully landscaped. |
