Text Appearing Before Image: finest church of Mantua, is a struc-ture in the Italian style of very imposing proportions. It waserected in 1492 from designs by the Florentine Leo BattistaAlberts, but the dome was not added till 1782. St. Antony admonishing the tyrant Ezzelino,painted in 1844 by Count Arrivahene. At the sides are frescoes, repre-senting Hell, Purgatory and Paradise according to Dante. — 3rd Chap.,the Cappella S. Lonflino, contains a sarcophagus with the inscription:Longini ejus, qui latus Christi percussit, ossa. The frescoes, designed byGiulio Romano, represent the Crucifixion, beneath is Longinus, on the opposite side the finding of the sacred blood. The saint is said to have broughthither some drops of the blood of Christ, which were preserved in analtar (destroyed by Hungarian soldiers in 1848) in the Crypt, beneath thehigh altar. — The S. Transept contains the monument of Bishop Andreasi(d. 1549), by a pupil of Michael Angelo. The swan is the distinctiveemblem in the armorial bearings of Mantua. — Choir.
