English: Stucco fragment from San Salvatore in Brescia
This stucco fragment belongs to the markedly lavish decorative arch covering in the main nave of the monastery church of San Salvatore in Brescia. The monastery was founded as a women's cloister by the last Lombard king, Desiderius, and one of his daughters became the first abbess. The stucco fragment shown here displays a decorative system of two ornamental bands that run parallel to one another. The upper ornamental band consists of a three-stranded braid. Isolated fragments of colored paint are preserved in the pendentives. Situated in sockets at regular intervals in the middle are rivets that were used to attach the stucco to the subsurface. The sockets are surrounded by five petals. In addition, remnants of colored glass paste are preserved.
