English: Reliquary of Saint Apollinaris
In the early Christian church of Sant'Apollinare dedicated to Bishop Apollinaris who died as a martyr, a capsule-shaped reliquary of silver was found in 1920 under the altar of the church, located in a larger, crushed metal container. The cover of the rectangular silver box shows the half-length portrait of a beardless man viewed from the front. His hair is parted in the middle and pulled behind the ears in thick strands. He is wearing a high-necked, sleeved tunic with beaded decorative edging. He is holding a cross in both hands in front of his chest. The narrow sides of the reliquary are decorated with braided animal motifs in loop ornaments. This particular style is part of Germanic Animal Style II, dates to the early 7th century, and is widespread in Lombard Italy as an ornamental motif. To date, this type of portrayal is unique among the numerous capsule reliquaries of Trentino.
