Description
English: Life Cycle of the Phytopathogenic Fungus Microbotryum violaceum A healthy plant is infected by teliospores of M. violaceum (1) . The teliospores germinate, undergo meiosis, and produce yeast-like sporidia (2). Conjugation takes place on the plant between sporidia of opposite mating types (3). Dikaryotic hyphae grow in the plant (4) and overwinter in vegetative tissues (5). The following year, infection is systemic (6) and all flowers produce diploids teliospores in the anthers (7) and are transmitted by pollinators (8) onto a healthy plant (1).
