Samuel May, Jr. offers a "most heartfelt welcome home" from his recent journeys, and thanks Garrison for the letter he has received from him. May expresses his glee at learning of Garrison's "increased dimensions", commenting that at "172 lbs. must make [Garrison] look really stout!" May recounts the weather of the past summer, and appraises Garrison of the recent news concerning his own family. May informs Garrison that a "re-union of old Free-soilers" took place the previous month at Downer's Landing, where George Hoar "made a very good speech"
