A note in pencil on the envelope indicates that Robert Folger Wallcut also read the letter, "Mr. Webb's placing my name on one corner of this letter emboldened me to open it."
Addressed to May at 21 Cornhill, Boston. A note in the corner of the envelope reads, "or Mr. Wallcut."
Envelope includes two original postage stamps

May's handwriting on the envelope reads, "Rec'd Apr. 13. Ans'd [Apr.] 19 (in part)." Another note by May reads, "Relating to Rich[ar]d W. Webb, in California."

Webb informs May that his son was unable to find employment in Australia and that he plans to return via San Francisco and the Isthmus of Panama. Webb asks May to help his son if necessary. He mentions Sarah Parker Remond and attacks "popery."
