Description
Charles Augusts Peabody's Uncle Jessie was a minister, and not all together a successful one. He was somewhat overbearing in his Christianity. He had preached at several parishes and hadn’t lasted over six months at any of them. Unfortunately for him he had it in his mind that he didn’t try hard enough and became even more overbearing.  This was his condition when he was corresponding with Charles in the 1860s during the war years. He made it a spiritual goal to persuade his nephew to go on to Theological School, rather then Medical school when he graduated from Amherst. He went so far as to visit with several of Charlie’s professors at Amherst urging them to help him guide Charles towards the ministry. They told him that what he was asking was outrageous and worst of all that he was overbearing.


Charles loved his Uncle Jesse, and in some ways he was like a father to Charles.  When Charles, on his own accord, found Christ, Uncle Jessie was the first to be told.

 “…I am rejoiced that you have given your heart to Christ.  There is no news so sweet to me as that of sinners coming to Jesus.  You have done well.  You are on the road to Heaven. All are hoping to reach that place at last, but few find it.  The proof of a change of heart comes out more in ones’ life. A true Christian is a working Christian.  Where our treasure is, there is our heart.  All we live for is to prepare for Heaven, and this preparation comes from Consecration, and self-sacrifice."
