Notes | The block must have been cut in 1528, while the signature HSB (in use only after Beham's move to Frankfurt, c.1531-2) was, according to Dodgson, inserted later; he also referred to an impression dated 1528 formerly in the Lanna collection with Beham's earlier form of monogram, HSP. See C. Dodgson 'Early German Woodcuts', vol.1, pp.480-81 for the various blocks, including this one, assembled for Beham's 'Kunst und Lerbüchlein' and published in Frankfurt: (Chr. Egenolph) in 1546. Printed on the same stout paper as the 'Peasant' 1857,0613.312 (Pauli 1284) with nothing printed on the verso; Dodgson describes both prints as proofs. On the grounds of the manuscript numbers in the same early hand on the verso of each, the two prints have probably been kept in the same collection for a long time. | |||||||||||||||||||||||

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
