Description |
Qing dynasty: set of 14 cups c.1760-70: set of 30 cups c.1790-1800Such large sets of cups with lids do not often survive. In this case, thirty identical cups were bought at Bukowskis in 1893, and a further fourteen in 1899. Small, rounded pots of this type were assigned various functions. In England they contained individual portions of custard or cream during the dessert course, whereas at the Marieberg factory in Sweden they were know as “jelly cups”. In France they were called “pot à jus” and were used to serve hot juices or soups such as bouillon or consommé. Pots with handles would be especially suitable for the latter purpose. Such lidded cups were made at factories all over Europe, and Chinese export examples were copied from them. |
