Description |
English: The Ottoman Empire was one of the world's premier great powers in the 17th century. And one which was also expanding. The empire's special guardians were the Janissaries; elite soldiers with a strong religious conviction. Thanks to their successes, the organisational structure, reward system and battle music of these troops had an impact on European armies. Different forms of Islamic ornamentation also found their way into Europe. For example, there are Dutch tile ovens with “arabesques” at Skokloster Castle and its library contains two beautifully bound books, of which this copy of the Qur'an is one. The reason why Carl Gustaf Wrangel purchased this Qur'an is unknown. Wrangel's library also contains a contemporary description in German of the Qur'an and the Ottoman Empire. The purpose was perhaps to get to know his enemy, or to admire the beauty of the text, or simply to have the pleasure of owning an exotic object. |
