Der Marquis de Chambray, Mitglied einer alten Adelsfamilie aus der Normandie, war ein bedeutender Offizier und wurde 1788 zum Feldmarschall ernannt. 1789 vertrat er die Stadt Evreux in den „États Generaux“ (Generalstaaten). Als Verfechter des Ancien Régime war er gezwungen auszuwandern und ging nach Wien, wo er den Rest seines Lebens verbrachte.
