Description
English: A Japanese katana can be taken apart, and it is possible that the parts arrived in Europe separately. Most likely, there was no real Japanese blade at hand, and so another one was used to replace it. The sheath is customarily made from wood covered in skin from a ray. The earliest inventory lists describe the sheath as having a decorative silk ribbon, tied in a rhombus pattern. The smaller decorations on the sheath, known as the menuki, depict three animals from the zodiac: a tiger, an ox and a rat.
