Description

Ise ona awo riran is one of the oldest indigenous vocations of the Yoruba people and currently one of the indigenous vocations that are going into extinction. Prior to the colonial era, there were several wars among the Yoruba people, and against other tribes or ethnic groups. Charms, Hamlet are major weapons and were among the major ammunition used by the Yoruba people. The chams are embedded in a leather by "alawo" who carefully used this to design a hamlet for the warriors. This vocation is very sensitive as there are procedures that must be carefully followed during the sowing process. Most of the charms have their dos-and-don't and the alawo must pay attention, and be careful in handling the charms and harmlets to avoid neutralizing it or harming himself.

This vocation is already going into extinction as there is currently only one known person doing this vocation in Yoruba land today.

This audiovisual was recorded in Iseyin, a town in Oyo State of Nigeria on the 20th of July 2022. The video features Isiaka Ojuabere and his son who is inheriting the work from him. The video was directed and produced for the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group by Tunde Oladimeji, a notable documentary film maker in Nigeria.
