The Indian Stone-Curlew

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Indian Stone-Curlew, also known as the Indian Thick-Knee (Burhinus indicus), is a distinctive bird species belonging to the family Burhinidae. Formerly considered a subspecies of the Eurasian Stone-Curlew, it is primarily found across the plains of South and South-eastern Asia.

This large, peculiar-looking shorebird exhibits streaky brown plumage and striking yellow eyes, with a distinct black-and-white wing pattern visible during flight. It is most active during dusk or nighttime, often seeking shelter under shady vegetation during the day. Its preferred habitats include dry areas such as fields, thorn forests, and dry riverbeds. The Indian Thick-Knee is known for its vocalization, emitting a rapid series of high, sharp ‘kli!’ notes after dark.

During the breeding season, the Indian Thick-Knee lays a clutch of one to two pale buff-colored eggs in a shallow depression on bare ground or beneath vegetation. Both parents take turns to incubate the eggs for a period of 25–30 days until they hatch. While the female is responsible for incubation, the male diligently guards the nest, exhibiting protective behavior against potential predators.

Upon hatching, the chicks emerge with downy, cryptic feathers, closely resembling their surroundings. When threatened, they adopt a crouching posture, blending seamlessly with their environment. Witnessing the nurturing behavior of the mother and the vigilant protection provided by the male is truly a cherished experience.

This documentation serves as a timeless record of the tender care and protective instincts exhibited by these elusive birds, preserving their story for generations to come. This bird was documented at Bhigwan, Maharashtra, India.
