Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This movie shows a discharge of calcium transients that occurs in two independent spinal afferent axons that both ramify within a single myenteric ganglion of the distal colon, that was pinned under maintained circumferential stretch. A 40× water immersion lens was used to capture the images at a frame rate of 40 Hz; and the movie is reproduced in real time. The first axon shows a discharge of calcium transients that occurs simultaneously in multiple discrete varicosities along a single axons (indicated by the arrows appearing toward the start of the movie), whilst in the presence of hexamethonium (400 μM) and nifedipine (1 μM). The first axon that is activated is fires throughout the movie. Toward the end of the movie, a second independent axon and associated varicosities are also activated simultaneously (indicated by different arrows appearing toward the end of the movie).
