"Some of our co-operators having expressed a desire to be freed from their connection with these illustrations, it is now proposed to conclude this series with the present number, but a new series will be continued, upon our own resources."--From a printed leaf bound in at the end of v. 3, captioned "Note" and signed "W.J.--P.I.S."
The new series (with plates marked "n.s."), sometimes referred to as v. 4 of this set, was issued in parts between 1836 [or 1837?] and 1843

SCNHRB copy (v. 1, 39088007330921; v. 2, 39088007141922; v. 3, 39088007271133) has stamps: 1. (embossed) Smithsonian Institution National Museum; accession no. added in pencil: 165359; 2. (ink) Lenox Library, New York. Duplicate. There are some ms. annotations throughout
SCNHRB copy has plate no. 135 misnumbered as "138", with the number corrected by hand; the colored version of the plate for 136 is correctly numbered, but the uncolored version is misnumbered as "137"
SCNHRB copy of v. 1 has modern green buckram library binding with gilt-lettered spine; v. 2-3 have half-leather bindings with marbled paper boards and gilt-tooled spines, and are each housed in an archival paperboard box for preservation
CHMRB copy (selected portions from v. 1-3 bound together in 1 v., 39088014683809, 29 cm. tall) is imperfect: the title leaves are wanting, as are all of the uncolored versions of the plates. The CHMRB composite volume includes the plates and accompanying textual descriptions for no. 1-65, 121-141 (the plate for no. 142 is wanting, although the text is present), and 143-151, only. Plate no. 111 [Trichoglossus haematodus; hand-colored, with a single figure of the bird] is misbound at the end of the volume, and lacks the textual description; in the SCNHRB copy, the hand-colored version of no. 111 also features a single figure of the bird, while the uncolored version shows two figures of the bird
CHMRB copy has inserted at the end of the volume: "Directions for preserving and preparing birds" ([1] p.), signed "Packages or communications may be addressed to Sir W. Jardine ... or P.J. Selby ...," with a recipe for "arsenical soap" printed at the bottom of the page. This leaf is not present in the SCNHRB copy, and it is not known whether it was generally issued with the publication
CHMRB copy has a ms. pencil annotation on the front paste-down endpaper: The Misses Hewitt; accession no.: 2415
CHMRB copy has a modern brown half-cloth binding with marbled paper boards, gilt-tooled spine, and marbled edges; with binder's stamp on front free endpaper: Bound by Bailer Bros. N.Y
