Summary
[edit]DescriptionHouse at 117 Kelburn Street, Buffalo, New York - 20200831.jpg |
English: As seen in August 2020. Built c. 1925, the two-story wood-framed house at 117 Kelburn Street, Buffalo, New York is pleasant and well-maintained, but sports no particularly discernible architectural style (though the subtle Classical details on the front porch, including Doric pilasters, are worthy of note). Despite its name, German-Americans made up not the bulk but only a large minority among the residents of Buffalo's Kaisertown neighborhood, which at this stage of history was otherwise given over to a bustling Polish enclave, nicknamed Kazimierzowo in honor of the local Catholic church. Walenty Kuszynski, an industrial laborer who lived there with his family for only three or four years, is the first recorded resident of 117 Kelburn, and he serves as a pretty typical example both of the kind of people who called the place home in its early years and how long they stayed there. Subsequent owners include Edward Jurewicz and his wife Alfreda née Buczkowski, the photographer's great-grandparents, who the 1940 census records as residing there along with their four children, including Edward Jr., the photographer's maternal grandfather. |
