Description Chief Engineer Edgar Thomson surveyed a route over the Allegheny Mountains for the Pennyslvania Railroad (PRR) between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh - cutting days of the old canal/portage railroad route. The PRR route, not operated by Norfolk Southern, crests at the Gallitzin Tunnels. B&W image.
