This is one from a series of 197 illustrations to Le Roy's 1678 edition of "Notitia Marchionatus" (published in Amsterdam by Albertus Magnus and printed by Frans Lamminga) showing castles, abbeys, monasteries, palaces and tombs in the Southern Netherlands. The series is registered under the numbers 1848,0205.281 to 477. The complete book was broken up on acquisition, and the plates placed in different series: most are under the printmaker, others are with portraits and topography, and the residue (mostly coats of arms and effigies) is with the 'Broken Series'. The plates are engraved by various printmakers such as Richard Collin, Philibert Bouttats, Franz Ertinger (IFF 101-145; IFF 626-664), Wenceslaus Hollar, Lucas Vorsterman II (Hollstein 115-163), Jacob Harrewyn, Jacques Neeffs (Hollstein 33), Edouard van Ordonie, Adam Perelle, Jan van Troyen, Lucas van Uden and Lucas Vorsterman II among others; most of them not signed by the artist. Some of the illustrations were made prior to the publication (see for instance those by Hollar, Neeffs and Vorsterman) while others were specifically commissioned for the 1678 edition (those by Ertinger). Vorsterman contributed 46 illustrations which were initially used in Antonius Sanderus' "Presbyteri Chorographia sacra Brabantiaa" (Brussels: 1659). Some of the plates are re-used in later editions of Le Roy's publications: - "Castella et Praetoria Nobilium Brabantiae" or "De Kastelen en Borgten van de Edelen van Brabant" (Antwerp: 1694) - "Castella et Praetoria Nobilium Brabantiae" or "De Kastelen en Borgten van de Edelen van Brabant" (Amsterdam: 1696) - "Castella et Praetoria Nobilium Brabantiae" or "De Kastelen en Borgten van de Edelen van Brabant" (Leiden: 1699) - "Brabantia Illustrata" (Leiden, Amsterdam, The Hague: 1705) The plates in "Castella et Praetoria Nobilium Brabantiae" are arranged alphabetically so that no noble person would take offence at the order of appearance. An abridged version of the work was issued in 1694 and the first complete edition was published by Pieter van der Aa in 1699 in Leiden; with text appearing in Latin, French and Dutch.
