Description |
English: Home from the Brazils - refitting Wyllie was a well-known maritime artist, though his elder brother William Lionel Wyllie (1851-1931) was more celebrated and prolific. Both painted the same class of general shipping subject though W.L. Wyllie did more modern naval ones from the 1880s onwards. The painting shows a sailing ship being refitted drawn up on a slipway. Such ships made long-distance voyages - not only to Brazil, but also to Asia and Australia - throughout the nineteenth century, long after the arrival of steamships. |
