To judge from her wide hairstyle, kimono with long, hanging sleeves and 'obi' tied high at the back this is a lady's maid ('oku jochu') from one of the 'daimyo' or Bakufu households, carrying a flowering pink morning glory in a large porcelain planter ceremoniously out in front of her, as if she will present it to her mistress. The outlines have been quickly sketched in with a fairly dry brush - much in the manner of Kuniyoshi's preparatory drawings on paper - and then the patterns on the robes added in simple washes of colour, with a design of stone breakwaters beside a winding river around the hem of the kimono. Such paintings must have been rapidly executed to order, requiring little time and effort from a draughtsman of Kuniyoshi's capabilities.
