Summary
[edit]DescriptionHamer House Ruins - geograph.org.uk - 149508.jpg |
English: Hamer House Ruins. At one time "The Lettered Board" public house, this has been unoccupied since the 1930s and the harsh climate combined with removing of useful items such as the roof has led to rapid complete ruination.
The nearby road was formerly more travelled than it is today, as a main road between York and Whitby in stagecoach times (and before). Perhaps the heyday of the Inn was in the 19th Century when agricultural improvements in Eskdale to the North required lime from the Cropton area. Horse-drawn wagons travelled the route frequently, carrying lime North and coal on the return route. It's still possible to make out the main building (shown) and a line of outbuildings stretching to the West, which are mere grassy mounds. |
