Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Covering an area of 5500m2, Celje Castle was the largest and most important castle in the area east of the Alps in the 16th century. The expansion was due to the Counts of Celje, who had owned the castle since 1333. In 1348 an earthquake hit the building, but the damage was repaired shortly after. Due to its diminished military use, the castle was gradually abandoned at the beginning of the 18th century and slowly fell into ruin. 1795, the last inhabitant left the castle and at the beginning of the 19th century it was even used as a quarry for other buildings in the town and its surroundings. In 1846, the Governor of Styria bought up the ruins. In 1882, restoration work began that is still continuing to this day.
