Summary
[edit]DescriptionG51 Northcliffe, 1986(1).JPG |
English: In the pale winter sunshine at Northcliffe railway station, Western Australia, ex-Midland Railway of Western Australia G class locomotive no G51, in Westrail orange and blue livery, runs around a rake of empty timber wagons it has just brought in from Manjimup, to the north. The locomotive will then push the wagons a little further south, to the Northcliffe timber mill, for loading. G51 was built in English Electric's Australian factory in Rocklea, Queensland. It was basically a British Rail Class 20 fitted with cape gauge wheelsets, Western Australian style headlights, and a few other minor body alterations. The very last locomotive to be acquired by the MRWA, it entered service in May 1963, less than a year before the company's assets and operations were taken over by the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) (later renamed Westrail). After being repainted into the WAGR green and red livery in 1968, and later still into the Westrail livery seen here, the locomotive remained in service until May 1990, and was scrapped in January 1991.
