Description

This is a composition by Emma F. Peabody (1847 - 1865) titled, “For Whom I Should for President, and Why.” In her answer she considered women’s role in the election.

“this election is generally conducted by men, but men are sometime influenced by women.  The office of women is to keep silent in regard to these public affairs.  But contrary to this silence we are now to vote for President, or in other words, to declare for whom we should vote and why we should so vote… In the language of Webster, I am for Liberty and Union, now and forever…. Having considered the two candidates for this office and satisfied myself in regard to them, I think Abraham Lincoln the better prepared to enter on the performance of the duties of this office."

 

“…this election must be the last lingering wish of Jeff Davis, his last hope of success. With it he may hope that his cause may prosper and his struggle has not been in vain.  Without it his last hope will have been crushed.  He knows Mr. Lincoln too well to hope much from him and the life of the Southern Confederacy will be crushed and broken in the iron grasp of the Federal Union."
