Summary
[edit]DescriptionElasticRebound Thum.png |
English: Elastic rebound theory. Stresses build on both sides of a fault that is locked, causing the rocks to deform elastically (Time 2). When the stresses become too great, the locked fault breaks and the rocks return suddenly to their original shape (Time 3). This motion releases the stored elastic strain energy that creates an earthquake. |
