Notes |
As observed by Bober (1957, p. 74) this is after the central portion of a sarcophagus in the Vatican used in the 16th century as a fountan basin under the River God Tigris (C. Robert, 'Die antiken Sarkophagreliefs', Berlin 1890-, II, p. 99f, no. 80, pl. XXXIV-V and D. Grassinger, 'Die mythologischen Sarkophage' (Teil 1), Berlin, 1999, p. 240, no. 101, see www.census.de, ID 16515) and she believes that Aspertini saw it before its restoration, as one can gather from differences like for instance the grotesque head on the ground of the right-hand page instead of a helmet, or the head of the figure standing in the middle, which is facing the opposite way and represents an old bearded man instead of a beardless youth. See also Faietti-Scaglietti 1995, p. 76, n.112. Lit.: P.P. Bober, 'Drawings after the Antique by Amico Aspertini. Sketchbooks in the British Museum', London, 1957, f. 44v-45, p. 74; M. Faietti-D. Scaglietti Kelescian, 'Amico Aspertini', Modena, 1995, p. 76, n.112. For a general introduction to the sketchbook see 1898,1123.3.1 |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
