Notes |
As noted by Bober the upper tier derives from a sarcophagus preserved in the Renaissance at the entrance to SS. Cosma and Damiano. It is now fragmentary and divided among several collections (part of the cover is here in the British Museum, no. 2299; Bober-Rubinstein 1986, no. 142), two fragments in the Vatican and three in Palazzo Salviati in Rome (see D. Grassinger, 'Die mytologischen Sarkophage' (Teil 1), Berlin 1999, pp. 239-40, no. 100, pls. 90.4, 96, census ID 25585). Aspertini's interpretation is very free, unlike the earlier rendering in the Wolfegg Codex (ff. 32v-33 upper tier; Schweikhart 1986, pp. 81-2). For a painted version of the same subject and further comments see Faietti-Scaglietti, cat. dip. 41, p. 179-80 (for which see also 1898,1123.3.35). The lower tier is also a free transcription of the front of a Niobid sarcophagus today in Wilton House (Bober-Rubinstein 1986, no. 107, p. 139, see www.census.de, ID 210834), but in the Renaissance was found walled high on the façade of a house at the foot of the Capitol Hill in Rome (see Bober, id, p. 64). Zeichnungen nach der Antike von Amico Aspertini', London, 1986, pp. 81-2; P.P. Bober-R. Rubinstein, 'Renaissance Artists and Antique Sculpture', New York, 1986, under no 107; M. Faietti-D. Scaglietti Kelescian , 'Amico Aspertini', Modena, 1995, p. 180 For images of the codex Wolfegg see www.census.de, ID 60826 For a general introduction to the sketchbook see 1898,1123.3.1 |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
