In van Loo's preliminary oil sketch for the painting, the shield was a cartouche with a crown the initials FR - Fridericus Rex. Friedrich ließ wohl seinen Namen durch das grüne Tuch abdecken, was schon von Zeitgenossen als Anzeichen seiner Bescheidenheit ausgelegt wurde. |
