"Defense Against the Dark Arts: Disinformation on Wikipedia". a recording of a talk originally given by Mary Mark Ockerbloom at WikiConference North America on November 12, 2023. This version was recorded on Zoom following the conference and edited by Doreva Belfiore, co-host of the Philadelphia WikiSalon. Related links: WCNA submission page; WCNA Slides In this talk, I give a big picture overview of disinformation as an "all of society" problem. I talk about how it works, what to watch out for, and ways to counter it. It’s based on the research that I read while expanding the “Disinformation attack” article on Wikipedia. Despite the unfortunate auto-generated image shown above, the content of the talk is much broader than the creation of fake acccounts and astroturfing. |
