Deed Between Elijah Upton And James Batchelder 1828
Description
An 1828 deed between Elijah Upton of a section of Danvers, now Peabody, to James Batchelder of Danvers; Batchelder paid $800 for property in Danvers. The property  is on the road from the Old South Meeting House to Reading Consisting of a dwelling house and land under and adjoining the same ground as follows beginning at a stake on the southern side of said road at the east corner of Asa Sawyers Land than running easterly on said road fifty-one (51) feet to land of Lewis Hadley then southerly by said Hadley's land one hundred (100) feet hence westerly by land of the Grantees sixty-two (62) feet to Asa Saywers land then north by said Sawyers land one hundred (100) feet to the position first mentioned. It looks like the sale happend on May 1, 1828, but it was not until June 24 1828 that the deed was filed.

James Batchelder who was a housewright. Elijah Upton was born on August 14, 1785 in what is now North Reading; he is the son of Benjamin Upton. He was a tanner and later a currier. Elijah Upton was one of the first glue manufactures; He started his business in ca 1810s. Elijah Upton's wife's appears in the deed; her name was Ruth Upton. Towards the end of his life he was an invalid. He moved to Brattleborough, Vermont for his health and he is also where he died. Elijah died on March 25, 1860 in Brattleborough, Vermont.
