Summary

[edit]
Description
English: "This elaborate rock-cut structure, known in modern times as the "Deaf Man's Cave" was excavated in 2009. It is situated near "Kimon's Tombs" outside the Diateichisma fortification wall on the northeast side of the Eptathronon" and due south of two neighboring ancient carriage roads (the "South road" and Koile road). It consists of two chambers which are carved into a section of the rocky slope and an exterior square terrace. Inside the chambers, there are groups of rock-cut tombs in the larger chamber and two in the smaller one. Their last period of use is dated to the late Roman times (3rd cent. A.D.).

The elaborate rock-cut chambers, carved in the natural hard limestone, are scattered among all three hills. Originally they were used as worship places, later as dwellings, and even later as burial monuments. Traditional knowledge indicates that in the medieval period these were the dwellings of the Moires and the Kalokyrades (bonnes dames). The "Deaf Man's Cave", which was a typical dwelling of the classical period, was later turned into a grave monument, belonging to the cemetery which developed outside the Dipylon above the Gates and along the Koile Road. The cemetery was organized during the Hellenistic period (3rd cent. B.C. - 2nd cent. B.C.) and expanded in Roman times (1st cent. B.C. - 3rd cent. A.D.) over quite an extensive area encompassing the deserted residential area of the Demos (deme) of Koile.

The current name of the cave results from the oral tradition that a deaf man once resided in it." Text: Information board in the close vicinity of the caves.
