Summary

[edit]
Description

English: Curtiss' P-40 might not be as famous as the P-51 "Mustang" it flies together with here, but it played an important role in the Pacific and other theaters during World War II. With 13,738 built by the end of production in 1944, it was the third most-produced American fighter aircraft of its time, only surpassed by the P-51 and P-47.

The aircraft shown here, is F-AZKU, a P-40N that was built in 1942 and then entered service with USAAF in the Pacific. After World War II it was lost until 1970 when it was rediscovered at Tadji Airfield in Papua New Guinea from where it was first brought to Lae, Papua New Guinea, then (in 1974) to New Zealand and later (in 1991) to the US, where it was restored to an airworthy condition in 2002 and sold to its current owner, the Amicale Jean-Baptiste Salis association in La Ferté Alais near Paris in France. The aircraft can be seen here, on a flying display at Hahnweide Air Show 2013, which was partly done together with North American P-51 "Mustang" F-AZSB, whose solo parts are shown in another video on my channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDG2m6iK_Ac). The P-40's pilot on this flight was Jacques Habert.

A more detailed history of F-AZKU can be found at http://www.touchdown-aviation.com/flying-legends/plane/amicale-jean-baptiste-salis/curtiss-p-40n-kittyhawk-f-azku.php
