Description: An aerial view of Sigiriya : a big and tall rock showing at its peak the rests of buildings foundations on 3 levels. The vegetation is very scarce. Below the peak, there is a promontory where ruins of buildings and a staircase can be seen. At the foot of the rock, there is a lake and a forest all around.

At the request of the Sri Lankan Government, UNESCO is taking part in a five-year programme to restore and protect the principal sites and monuments within a zone marked out by the ancient cultural capitals of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy.
