English: LIBI_00019_00240; This item is a silver gelatin print postcard of the land around Appomattox Court House in Virginia. The postcard is 3 1/2 x 5 1/2" and was produced circa 1914 commissioned by A.L. Cheney of Morrisville, Vermont. This item was a part of a photographic series and on the front of the postcard, written in blue ink on the bottom center, is a handwritten notation in blue ink reads either "No. 9" or "No. 7." Some hazing is evident on the lower left portion of the image. On the verso, a handwritten notation in blue ink reads: "Appomattox C.H./Lynchburg Pike at Appomattox C.H. Crossing Appomattox River, but a brook here. In the edge of the corn field at the left under its drop stood the apple tree beside the road where Col. Babcock found Gen. Lee when sent to bear him to the McLean house to meet Gen. Grant. Lee's headquarters were on the estate's hillside just this side of the woods shown at the right of the tree near the Appomattox.
