La historia más primitiva de la villa de Muxía va ligada a la existencia de un conjunto de piedras situadas en la Punta da Barca y al culto de tipo mágico-religioso que a lo largo de los siglos se practicó hacia ellas. Este conjunto dio origen a un conjunto de ritos y creaciones legendarias precristianas que perduraron en la posterior etapa de cristianización hasta nuestros días.

La Pedra dos Cadrís, que según la leyenda cristiana simbolizaría la vela de la embarcación en la que apareció la Virgen, tiene forma de riñón o hueso ilíaco, según se mire, y a ella se le atribuyen propiedades curativas para dolencias de la espalda, reuma, etc. Para que estas dolencias curen es preciso pasar nueve veces por debajo de ella.

Sin duda la Pedra de Abalar fue la que despertó mayor curiosidad y atracción hacia las gentes de la comarca y de fuera de ella. Aunque existen en Galicia más piedras de 'abalo' o 'cabaleiras', la más conocida con diferencia es ésta de Muxía. Esta piedra tiene de perímetro unos 30 m, un espesor entre 15 y 30 cm, una longitud de 8,70 m y una anchura de casi 7 m.
