Description
English: Side by side comparison of hand-drawn (left) and digital (right) first TV image of Mars. The image on the left was created when anxious technicians at JPL, wanting to know if the tape recorder that stored the data aboard mariner 4 really worked, and not have to wait for data processing, printed paper strips of pixel data bits (numbers), which they coloured, with pastel crayons, after a colour code roughly following brightness levels. Putting the strips together one after another created the image in the left. The image on the right is the image as was finally rendered by the system.
