Summary
[edit]DescriptionComet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS - the 80,000 year comet (54089163055).jpg |
(Sharing the comet experience with my cuz, Lisa Demsko, was a joy - from Columbia, MO) A rare comet called Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is going overhead. I got this photo of the marvel with my cellphone. She's the thingy that looks like a falling star leaving a trail of light. She's also called C/2023 A3 - and is from the Oort cloud discovered by the Purple Mountain Observatory in China on 9 January 2023 and independently found by ATLAS South Africa on 22 February 2023. After her closest approach of about 44 million miles from Earth, she won’t return for 80,000 years. She should be visible throughout October, weather permitting. Thanks to all the folks who helped me find her and keep me abreast of these fabulous phenomenon! (A comet is a frozen leftover from the formation of our solar system that orbits the sun and is made of dust, rock, and ices. Comets are known for their long tails and are sometimes called "dirty snowballs.") |
