Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Example visualization of cascading failure – cascade model on an empirical spatial network, here: the UCTE network (European power transmission network), based on grid data from 2002 (the UCTE network in 2002 consisted of 1254 transmission stations, spanning 18 European countries).

Movie S2 (original caption):

Progression of the cascade initiated by the removal of the node with the highest load on the UCTE network with tolerance parameter α = 0.45.
Although the tolerance parameter is greater than in the case of Movie S1, a greater number of nodes, 299, fail in the cascade, and the resulting giant component is also smaller, with 315 nodes. The nodes shown in gray indicate those nodes which failed in course of the cascade occurring for α = 0.40 (shown in Movie S1), but survived when α was increased to 0.45. The survival of these nodes potentially plays a role in making the cascade more severe. All other color and node size conventions are identical to those in Movie S1.
