English: Astronauts experience structural changes to their heart during long-duration spaceflight, but the biological basis of that is not clearly understood. Jonathon Baio, a doctoral student at Loma Linda University’s School of Medicine, details an investigation of cardiovascular stem cells that hopes to better understand their role in cardiac biology and tissue regeneration, which could advance ways to maintain cardiac health of astronauts during extended missions as well inform future treatments to reverse heart muscle loss upon return to Earth, and may help the medical community combat cardiovascular disease, one of the world’s leading causes of death.
