- 5.Light pink: areas occupied in world war II *
- 6.Purple: Princely States (in India) and other Protectorates
- 7.Lavender: areas lost by 1705 (England only)
- 8.Hachured: sphere of influence (click image for better resolution)
- 9.Salmon: areas of defeated Axis occupied 1943-1955**154
Note * - as outlined in the article, these areas may or may not have been administered and some were administered or occupied subject to international agreements. Note **- In Italy, the occupation did not involve all of the coloured area at once, but temporary military government was established in those areas until the Italian King’s government could take over. Also note that the responsibility and chain of command of the occupation forces in the zone in Japan differed somewhat from the forces for the zones in Germany and Austria. The occupation zones are not considered as “British” territory, however they were fully administered through (and the responsibility of) British military governments, which had more control over these zones than Britain had over many of its protectorates. The dotted line running just west of the solid white-line borders of Egypt and Sudan with Libya represents the old border (before 1920).
For Cuba and Philippines, Havana and Manila (respectively) are coloured dark red-brown (for the period 1762-1763) although it is disputed whether the British only controlled the cities themselves or the entire territory during that time. For the Dominican Republic, only the city of Samana was occupied briefly in 1809. For Haiti (Saint-Domingue at the time), Britain appointed a Governor for St. Dominique (effectively annexing the colony), but were far from controlling the whole colony as is shown by the areas coloured dark red-brown (which were the only areas the controlled from 1793-1798).Im Folgenden die Erklärung der Farben:
- 4. Dunkles Rotbraun: bis 1920 wieder verlorene Gebiete
- 5. Hellrosa: Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges besetzte Gebiete
- 6. Violett: Protektorate (Ägypten, Aden, Oman, Malaya, Sarawak, Nordborneo u.a.) und Fürstenstaaten in Indien
- 7. Violett gerahmt: Iran (brit. Protektorat von 1919 bis 1921)
